Hungary's White Rose in Albania

1.jpg

There are very few people n Hungary only to know that the first Queen of Albania was a Hungarian countess. Geraldine Apponyi was married by Zog, King of Albania in the year of 1938. Geraldine was given the name of White Rose still in her childhood. After their marriage people started to call the young Queen to be the White Rose of Albania.

I have got acquainted with her story long ago already from Josephine Dedet’s book but I did not have any idea that I would ever visit this wonderful country. When the invitation for the exhibition arrived, I started to plan the picture at once and reread the book also to refresh mm knowledge on Geraldine. the central figure of the picture is the Queen hugged by her husband, the King of Albania. The applied colours are black and read, the colours of the Albania flag.  The background in read symbolises the blood drawn in fights as well as the spirit shown in those fights. The double-eagle represents the national unity, the independence already since the XVth century when George Kastrioti, alias Skanderbeg united the 54 Albanian tribes. To strengthen the picture, I placed on it Skanderbeg’s Helmet, which is now guarded in Vienna above the head of King Zog.
