A Mandala Inspired by History
.png)
The idea to make this picture was born in Exeter, in England upon seeing the wonderful stained-glass windows of the Cathedral resembling to a rose. Eventually the picture is not a rose window although both the central rose motive and the circular structure might suggest this. The reason is that when I started to make the picture, I discovered the resemblance between the mandalas and the rose windows. Thus, my intention was to visualize some of the major events of the Hungarian history using this special form by using Hungarian stamps of course.
To start with I took the series named Fossils and Minerals issued in 1969 followed by the series Feszty Cyclorama featuring the panoramic picture made by Arpad Feszty about scenes of the Arrival of the Hungarians. Then came the stamps featuring warriors of passed times: horse archers, warriors with hatchet, lancet or spear, hussars with sabre, etc. The feature the Hungarian war of independence of 1848 was also a must of course with a citation taken from Sandor Petofi “Arise Magyar, your country calls!”. The series of events were closed with a series commemorating the revolution of the year of 1956.
